Give your volunteers a picture of your church’s vision

Giving your members and volunteers a look into what you foresee as the Lord’s plan for your church, can be a significant motivator to continue in the work your members are doing for their church family. When you share your vision with your church body, they get a sense of how their service is impacting the “bigger picture”, which results in enthusiasm and sustained energy to do the work which God has called us to carry out for Him.

Jesus conveyed to his disciples the future that they and all believers had to look forward to: the gift of eternal life in a heavenly Kingdom, worshipping God, and never again facing sadness or turmoil. Until that day however, the disciples and all of those who believed in Christ as the Savior, knew that they had the astonishing and honorable responsibility to spread the good news of salvation “to all nations” - without question, an overwhelming and enormous task.

When the apostles, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, were told of the work that Jesus was assigning them to, they could have given up based on the shear magnitude of their ministry. But because Jesus gave them a view of the immeasurably beautiful and staggering future that is in store for those who believe in Christ, they were able to joyfully press on in their ministry.

Taking Jesus as our example, church leaders need to realize how important it is to communicate to those who are serving, the overall vision we have for our church. In fact, to help your church members understand that their acts of service are the very things that keep the church alive, it should also be communicated that the church is their church, not just a place to attend, learn, and leave. With that as the mindset, your members and volunteers will hopefully become more aware that their service is allowing the long term vision to be achieved.

It is not enough to simply cast a vision, letting only a few individuals in on it, and then expect others to help carry out the vision while they have only caught a glimpse of that vision. Clearly and passionately giving your members the opportunity to gaze intently at their church’s future will encourage them to keep serving with all of their hearts, knowing that they are the hands and feet of God.
